How it's calculated

Electricity is billed by the kilowatt-hour (kWh) — using 1000 watts for one hour. The math:

  1. kWh per day = watts ÷ 1000 × hours. Example: 1500 ÷ 1000 × 4 = 6 kWh.
  2. Daily cost = kWh × rate. Example: 6 × $0.15 = $0.90.
  3. Multiply by days for the month, and by 365 for the year.

Your rate is on your power bill (look for "price per kWh"). The U.S. average is around $0.15–$0.18, but it varies a lot by state.
